Body
As fuel prices continue to climb, many municipalities are finding it harder to provide basic services to citizens and are looking to alternative fuels to save on operating costs. Balancing poor air quality concerns adds to the frustration for many of South Carolina's cities. However, the City of Rock Hill has been diligent in reducing its dependence on foreign oil as well as saving tax payer money on expensive gas and diesel.
For commitment to improving air quality, reducing dependence on foreign oil and saving tax payer dollars by utilizing a wide array of different alternative fuels and technologies, the City of Rock Hill was awarded the 2010 Palmetto State Greenest Fleet award by the Palmetto State Clean Fuels Coalition. In 2010, the City offset 122,103 gallons of gasoline equivalents and 1,158.4 tons of greenhouse gas emissions by using ethanol in 109 of its vehicles, biodiesel in 87 of its light and heavy duty vehicles, compressed natural gas in 2 light duty vehicles, 6 low speed electric vehicles and auxiliary power battery units in 24 police cruisers.
