Consider request for involuntary demolitions at Midtown Apartments.

Strategic Goal:  Quality of Life - make sure the City is well maintained.

.Body

Inspections of the remaining six buildings at the Midtown Apartments, located on Rauch and Wilhurst streets in the Hagins/Fewell Neighborhood, have been completed.  The buildings at 513, 537, 572 and 583 Rauch Street and 333 and 341 Wilhurst have been condemned.  The small accessory building at 547 Rauch, used as an office/laundry, must be demolished since it cannot remain without the main buildings.  All the buildings have been condemned and have been deemed unfit for human habitation.  The owners have been notified and have no plans to repair the buildings, and foreclosure is imminent.  There are no tenants in these buildings. Squatters and vandals are contributing to the deterioration of the buildings through theft, damage and criminal activity.  The fire department has had to respond on two separate occasions for grass fires.

We are requesting involuntary demolition for these buildings.  Asbestos abatement will be conducted prior to demolition and if necessary, lead abatement.
